The Cloisonne Pin

The metal cloisonne pin commemorates the 1999 Washington, DC Club Convention with the slogan Celebrate the Hero along with recognizing that this was GI Joe's 35th Anniversary.

The Documents

Inside is a file folder labeled CELEBRATE THE HERO containing a sheaf of paperwork including the convention programme containing all the information about the convention itself including a schedule and information on some members of Hasbro staff including Sam Speers, Virginia Perry Gardiner, Sam Petrucci, Jerry Einhorn, Larry O'Daly and Don Stivers. There is information on Buzz Aldrin to coincide with the release of the Buzz Aldrin Apollo Astronaut figure that year.

The September, 1999 edition of the GI Joe Collectors' Club Newsletter is in the folder, featuring the Conteinental Color Guard figures, the convention package as well as the convention itself.

A Certificate of Authenticity is also included certifying that the holder has helped "Celebrate the Hero" at the 1999 convention. This certificate lists the contents of the convention package and notes the date and is signed by the GI Joe Collector Club's Brian Savage, GI Joe Team Leader Bill Hartglass and Hasbro Design Manager Christopher John Gross.

The Figures

The figures are Classic Collection GI Joes with a new headsculpt which features a powdered wig, standard among soldiers of the time.

The figures are identical but for some eyebrow paint. Each has white gloved hands.

The wig includes a folded back-knot.
Each Guard has a GI Joe 35th Anniversary dog tag.

Both figures wear the red-trimmed blue coat with white waist-coat (sleeveless vest) inside. The coat is fastened with hook and eye. The waist-coat is attached with snaps. The neck is adorned with a black leather ascot with white bow which snaps at the rear.

The Armed Guard

Each Guard has the same clothing. White Gaiter-Trousers, Black Shoes, Waist-Coat, Coat, Ascot.

The Armed Guard comes equipped with a Musket, a Tri-Corner Hat, a Red Canteen, a Cartridge Box with Sling.

The Color Ensign

The Color Ensign comes equipped with a Tri-Corner Hat, a Flag Sling, an American Flag, a Red Canteen and a Cartridge Box with Sling

Each figure comes with a black semi-circular figure base with clear post which can fit under the back of the coat and support each figure to stand.

The Gear

In addition to the GI Joe figures and gear above, the convention package included several 1:1 scale items for you to wear and use.

A baseball cap with the elaborate logo embroidered onto the front.

The adjustable strap at the back is leather and has GI JOE etched into it rather nicely. It also has the embroidered logo of KB Toys, one of the convention sponsors, and the date of the convention.

To wear with the baseball cap is a white polo shirt with the logo equally beautifully emblazoned on the chest.

To put it all in, you get this blue cloth backpack with the logo embroidered on the rear pouch.

Summary

The Continental Color Guard, 3rd U.S. Infantry ("The Old Guard") figures are quite a handsome pair. With the head sculpt made for this set they look quite stately in their Revolutionary War outfits.

The attention to detail on the uniforms and quality of the set as a whole is quite good and take advantage of the relatively new Classic Collection bodies and gear.

This set can be purchased through the GI Joe Collectors' Club.

This set is a great item for the GI Joe collector or those interested in the historical era surrounding the forming of the United States of America.
