MOVIE REVIEW:
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Friendship Express
by Race Savage

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Friendship Express, is the latest DVD release from the My Little Pony series. I found this offering to be different from what one would come to expect from episodic DVD releases. You will find that this is not a “complete season” collection, but a selection of choice episodes.  In this way, the name fits rather well; this is a MLP express format, giving you just enough for you to crave more of that sweet, sweet, pony goodness.

The episodes featured on the DVD include the two-part season 1 pilot, “Friendship is Magic, parts 1 and 2” (Mare in the Moon, and Elements of Harmony respectively), “Over a Barrel,” “Hearth’s Warming Eve,” and “The Last Roundup,” (the first aired, unedited version). All are strong episodes and I look back on all of them favorably. Minus the pilot, all of the episodes on this DVD feature a train at some part; obviously an attempt to tie in Hasbro’s latest MLP playset, the “My Little Pony Magical Pony Express Train set.” I think that's very sneaky indeed, yet it is forgivable as this is such a minor detail. Nevertheless, the episodes are memorable, contain very strong character interaction, and possess a simple moral lesson. Bonus material on the DVD includes a sing-along for a song not featured in any of the episodes, character bio videos, a coloring sheet accessible from a computer, and the pilot episode of the Pound Puppies series.

If you bought these episodes alone through iTunes or a similar distributor, it would cost you the same as this DVD, and you would not have access to the bonus material. I believe this DVD is a good value for your money, especially when you consider that this has the original version of “The Last Roundup.”

The My Little Pony Friendship is Magic series is currently airing on The HUB network!
