Rapunzel Lets down Her Hair

Barbie doll became an overnight movie sensation in 2001 with her award-winning, top-selling debut video, "Barbie in the Nutcracker." Now the screen will sparkle once again with the fall 2002 premiere of "Barbie as Rapunzel." A contemporary twist on the classic fairytale, Mattel’s screenplay casts Barbie as Rapunzel, a courageous, imaginative girl who is locked away in a tower and magically paints her way to a life of freedom and love.

While "Barbie in the Nutcracker" introduced girls to classical ballet and music, Rapunzel’s exciting adventure encourages girls to unleash their creativity and introduces them to the world of fine art. "Barbie as Rapunzel" will continue to engage girls in the Brand in a fresh exciting way, while touching girls with the inspiring message that where there is love, imagination and determination, anything is possible.

The full-length, motion-capture CGI video will be accompanied by a colorful world of characters, accessories, licensed products and an illustrated book – all of which reflect the story’s magic and beauty.

New on shelves is the Rapunzel Barbie® doll. This beauty follows in the footsteps of last year’s Nutcracker Barbie doll.

The doll is inspired by the classic fairy tale of the princess with the endlessly flowing hair. Dressed in a delightful pink gown accented with pink and green flowers and a purple underskirt, Rapunzel waits patiently for her prince to climb the tower and save her. Her floor-length golden hair is accented with two thin braids in front.

Like the best selling The Nutcracker series, Mattel will be releasing an entire cast of other characters from the story featuring Ken, Kelly and her friends.

Girls will fall in love with playing out the romance of "Barbie as Rapunzel" with Ken doll as the charming Prince Stefan. And, the beautiful fairytale will magically come to life with Prince Stefan Ken speaking three different phrases to Rapunzel Barbie. With "Rapunzel, let down your hair," "Rapunzel I love you," and several sounds from the story, Ken doll’s talking feature will romance girls and Rapunzel Barbie alike. Wielding a sword and shield, the majestic prince dons a stately ensemble that includes beige satin pants, a blue satin coat embellished with gold brocade trim, gold boots and a regal crown.

Kelly and Tommy dolls – a huge success in the "Barbie in the Nutcracker" doll assortment – will make enchanting additions to the Rapunzel doll collection. Each of the four little dolls in the assortment is dressed for the masked ball, the exciting climax of the "Barbie as Rapunzel" story. These adorable younger siblings to Prince Stefan each have a fun princess or prince theme to allow girls to play out the magic and royalty of "Barbie as Rapunzel." Kelly® doll blossoms as the Petal Princess™ in a darling pink dress with roses and a princess hat. Melody® doll takes flight as an Angel Princess™ in a white dress with wings and a halo. Lorena® doll sprouts beautiful feathers as the Peacock Princess™ in a blue dress with beautiful "feathers" and Tommy™ doll stands regal and stately as the LiL Prince™ in his ornate, blue and gold prince costume.

Now girls can pal along with Penelope, Rapunzel’s sweet, and endearing dragon friend in

"Barbie as Rapunzel." Penelope, a soft and cuddly purple plush dragon, is just as much fun for girls as she is in the "Barbie as Rapunzel" story. Penelope is extremely ticklish and will respond by giggling and flapping her bright pink wings when girls give her tummy a squeeze. This loyal and beloved friend of Rapunzel plays a big role in the movie; she and Rapunzel learn the value of friendship, loyalty and courage. And, Penelope is also a good friend to girls – she loves to tell secrets! When she flaps her wings she speaks one of six inspiring, girl-empowering secrets. When girls hold her close, she whispers her secret to the girl. And, secrets aren’t the only thing Penelope wants to share. Her pretty necklace – a medallion on a delicate satin ribbon – can be worn by girls too!

Playsets will include a Rapunzel Horse & Carriage and a Rapunzel Enchanted Tower. A "My Size" Rapunzel Barbie will also be released.

Also appearing this week at retail stores and doll dealers is the Maria Therese™ Barbie®, the premier bridal doll in the Barbie® Fashion Model Collection. She is the epitome of matrimonial elegance. Dressed in a sublime satin gown covered in organza trimmed in satin, a v-shaped back with tailored bows and faux pearl buttons, Barbie makes a blushing bride. Her wedding day ensemble accoutrements include a mid-length veil accented with a tailored bow at the center, a petticoat, pantyhose, a delicate bouquet of flowers, and of course a blue garter. Faux pearl drop earrings, ruby red lips, and a sleek upswept bun provide the phenomenal finishing touches.

The wait is over for 70s and Mod Barbie fans and the reproduction Malibu Barbie doll is finally here. She taught you all about fun in the sun with her cool West Coast attitude. Now the quintessential California girl is back! A wonderful reproduction of the 1971 doll, she is authentically recreated in her aqua blue bathing suit. Yellow towel and sunglasses complete the beach ensemble, updated with an accompanying "sunscreen" bottle. This is one of the best reproductions the company has done so far. Now that they have recreated the "Stacey" head mold…can a reproduction Stacey be in our future? Let’s hope so. Imagine a beautiful new Stacey doll in a reproduction of the Nite Lightning or Stripes Are Happening Giftsets!
