Doll News January 15, 2002
By John Medeiros

Hallmark has announced many of their new ornaments for 2002 and doll collectors will be thrilled to see a few of their favorites in ornament form. New in the Barbie line will be Sophisticated Lady, Cheer for Fun, Rapunzel, Snowflake Ballerina, Celebration and Beautiful Bride Barbie ornaments. My favorite is a miniature replica of a 1961 "Travel Pals" Barbie train case with a set of 4 miniature pewter ornaments shaped like Barbie accessories. I also love the "Enchanted Evening" Case and Barbie ornament which is fourth in this series of one-sixth scale miniature cases and dolls.

Seventh in the "Madame Alexander" series will be "Winter Wonderland". Madame Alexander collectors will also be treated to the second in the "Little Women" porcelain series. This year we will see "Jo".

Speaking of Joes, fans of Hasbro's man of action will have their very own miniature recreation of the vintage sixties G.I. Joe lunchbox. This two-ornament set includes the tiny thermos as well. No word yet on a Joe figure yet to follow up the Action Soldier, Astronaut and Fighter Pilot produced for the past three years.

There will also be ornament versions of Madeline and Genevieve. These will actually be made of porcelain and jointed.

Lee Middleton Original Dolls, Inc. will host their annual Family Reunion Convention June 20-23, 2002. Club members and their guests may attend. Registration is limited to 350 participants. A "Make Your Own Baby" session is one of the many highlights. For more details on this event filled week please check the Lee Middleton website:

While there make sure to take a look at the "I Love America" and "Firefighter" dolls. Part of the proceeds for these two beauties goes to the WTC fund.

Ashton Drake has announced some of the 2002 Gene releases on the Collectibles Today website. Word is that this year's line will be a smaller, more focused collection. Collectors seem to be reacting very favorably to the news. "Autumn Lace" Violet Waters and "Dark Desires" Madra are early standouts. My personal favorite is the 2002 Gene "Calendar Girl: That Something Special" Coca-Cola Nurse doll. A basic "Totally Trent" doll is also being introduced. He will come dressed in A-shirt, T-shirt, boxers, socks, sock garters and shoes.

American Girl by Pleasant Company has some great new items now available. American Girl Today has a new "Valentine Party Outfit" with an optional matching set for Coconut the dog. Bitty Baby also has an adorable new Valentines Day "Sweetheart Set" that will be available Jan 22. Plus, shoppers can take advantage of a special free offer of cool matching Valentines by ordering $100 or more.

Make sure you check out "Lindsey", the newest American Girl. This award -winning doll is a limited edition that will only be produced till December 31, 2002 or until supply is exhausted.

Collectors of the American Girl Minis line have some great new sets to look forward this spring. I hear there is even going to be a rooftop Tiki Bar set!

Last week I announced the Dawn in Vegas Convention and this week the Dawn events keep on coming. The New Jersey Dawnette Society will be hosting the Dawn Jamboree 2002 at Watkins Glen State Park in the Fingerlakes region of New York on July 20-21 2002. This two-day retreat sounds like a doll and nature lover's slice of paradise. The family-friendly weekend schedule includes a doll fix-up clinic, outdoor activities, and contests with great prizes, family potluck supper, trading, crafts and camping under the stars. Not a camper? Not to worry. The Seneca Lodge in the park offers log cabin style lodging. Check the event website for all the details.
