Wednesday Tours

At 8:00 am, our group departed for the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in Woodside. The foundation has the world's largest collection of heavy armor. In their four buildings and restoration shop, they had everything from a WWI American T-17 to a Soviet T-72 Main battle tank. They even had a scud missile launcher. These vehicles belong to a private collector and tours such as this are not available to the public. Around 11:45, the tour continued north to San Francisco where we drove along the Embarcadero and the waterfront to Fisherman's Wharf where tour members had lunch at one of the restaurants overlooking the bay and shopped for souvenirs. At 2:10, we caught the ferry which took us to THE ROCK! The site of the first lighthouse built on the Pacific Coast, Alcatraz is best known as the infamous former federal prison that once held such notorious criminals as Al Capone, the Birdman of Alcatraz, and Machine Gun Kelly. Individuals took a special guided tour of the prison cellhouse; their audio guides for this tour will be the guards and inmates who occupied the island during the Federal Penitentiary era. Upon arrival back at the wharf area, the group visited nearby Pier 39, a shopping and restaurant complex which overlooks the Golden Gate. Individuals enjoyed dinner at many of the restaurants overlooking the pier, shopped some more at the specialty shops, and viewed the sea lions which frolick on the docks by the pier. Even though we were supposed to head back to the hotel at 8:00 p.m., our bus drivers gave us a special treat and drove us to a high point that overlooked the entired San Francisco city and bay area at sunset!
We arrived back at the hotel at almost 9:00 p.m!
