For over 35 years, G.I. Joe© has helped us explore and defend our backyards, playrooms and bedrooms. He has held the line against invasion countless times in millions of children's imaginations. He has served as a substitute father, confidant, and friend. He has brought families together by providing a focal point for shared adventures. Whether flying planes, orbiting the Earth, searching for lost treasure or patrolling the battlefront, G.I. Joe© has always been there for us, ready for action. His allegiance has never wavered.
Come show your allegiance June 22-25, 2000 at the Irvine Marriott Hotel in Irvine, California and return the favor by showing the world you are "Gung Ho for G.I. Joe©"!
Sponsored by Hasbro and the G.I. Joe© Collectors' Club, this family-oriented event guarantees a great weekend of fun for beginner and experienced collectors alike. Be part of the event everyone will be talking about for years to come!
The convention premium this year is again a two figure set! The set is based on the 1st American Volunteer Group (A.V.G.) better known to the world as the Flying Tigers! The Flying Tigers were a rare breed of men who volunteered to help defend China from devastating Japanese bombings during the dawn of WWII. Their primary mission was to keep the Burma Road open so that supplies could reach China's interior. The Flying Tigers were so successful that their exploits became the stuff of legends. In 30 weeks of battle the Tigers downed over 100 Japanese planes and lost but 14 of their own.
This two figure set
consists of a Flying Tiger Pilot and a Japanese Fighter Pilot. The Flying
Tiger Pilot comes with his Khaki flight uniform with Chinese insignia,
and a large bloodchit on the back, leather type flying jacket with bloodchit
insignia on the back, leather type skull cap, goggles, flight boots, .44
calibre 1911 pistol w/shoulder holster, scarf and cap. This figure will
come with the WWII style head.* The Japanese Fighter Pilot will come with
a summer weight flying uniform, boots, leather type skull cap, goggles,
type 14 8mm pistol w/shoulder holster, parachute harness, Samurai sword
w/scabbard, and cap. This figure will have a Japanese head and body.*
The set will also come with a copy of the the movie Flying Tigers
starring John Wayne.

The week will begin with two pre-convention tours. Both tours are great vacation opportunities that will be enjoyed by the whole family.
Long Beach: An International Adventure
9:30 am-4:00 pm Wednesday, June 21, 2000
On Wednesday, we will visit the famous port of Long Beach. Our day starts with a-behind-the-scenes tour of the RMS Queen Mary. This tour includes visits to such off-limits areas as the ship's drive train, boiler room, engine room and the First Class section. Our tour guide will focus on the Queen's service as a troop carrier during WWII and some of her many "ghost" stories. After the tour, we will visit San Pedro's Ports O' Call Village where you will lunch on your own among the Tudor-era buildings. After lunch and a little time for shopping, we will depart on a narrated cruise of the Long Beach Harbor. This impressive harbor is the gateway for over 50% of the United States' imports; a bustling mecca even on its slow days! Since we will be visiting during a week day, activity in the harbor should be quite high. After the cruise, we will arrive back at the hotel around 4:00 pm. Cost is $65 per person.
Top Gun & the U.S. Naval Base, San Diego
8:00 am-5:30 pm Thursday, June 22, 2000
On Thursday we will depart early in the morning for a trip to Top Gun (Miramar Air Station)! At Miramar, we will inspect their aircraft, watch the K9 team in action and be privileged to view a demonstration by their Aircraft Rescue & Firefighters unit. In the afternoon after lunch on your own at San Diego's Seaport Village overlooking the harbor, we will be visiting the San Diego Naval Station for a private tour of an active duty ship. Will it be a destroyer, a guided missile cruiser, or an amphibious assault vessel? We won't know until we get there, but it sure will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Please note that children must be at least 8 years of age to tour the active duty ship. Cost is $50 per person.
For those non-Joe enthusiasts (spouses, etc.) on Friday through Sunday we will be running two round trip shuttles a day to both Newport Fashion Island Shopping Center as well as South Coast Plaza Shopping Center. Both of these offer over 200 different stores to choose from. The shuttles are complimentary.
Southern California's temperatures in June range from the mid 80s to the mid 60s at night, so dress appropriately.
